{"id":55,"date":"2013-10-02T08:34:07","date_gmt":"2013-10-02T08:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.history.qmul.ac.uk\/writingmatters\/?p=55"},"modified":"2024-10-02T08:42:50","modified_gmt":"2024-10-02T08:42:50","slug":"which-writing-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.history.qmul.ac.uk\/writingmatters\/2013\/10\/02\/which-writing-matters\/","title":{"rendered":"Which &#8220;Writing Matters&#8221;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By <a title=\"Chris Sparks\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.history.qmul.ac.uk\/writingmatters\/about\/chris-sparks\/\"><strong>Chris Sparks<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In <a title=\"Why \u201cWriting Matters\u201d?\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.history.qmul.ac.uk\/writingmatters\/2013\/09\/26\/why-writing-matters\/\">our first post<\/a>, Jo set out the Writing Matters philosophy.\u00a0 We wanted our first post to be inspiring and engaging.\u00a0 We wanted to tell you that this blog is intended to start a conversation about the process and purpose of writing, without getting bogged down in the details.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s great\u201d, you might be thinking \u201cbut who are you, and what are you actually going to do?\u201d\u00a0 This post is your answer.<\/p>\n<p>This blog has been started by three members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.qmul.ac.uk\/\">School of History at Queen Mary, University of London<\/a>: <a title=\"Jo Cohen\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.history.qmul.ac.uk\/writingmatters\/about\/jo-cohen\/\">Jo Cohen<\/a>, <a title=\"Chris Sparks\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.history.qmul.ac.uk\/writingmatters\/about\/chris-sparks\/\">Chris Sparks<\/a> and <a title=\"Iain Stewart\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.history.qmul.ac.uk\/writingmatters\/about\/iain-stewart\/\">Iain Stewart<\/a>.\u00a0 We are all historians and writers; Jo and Iain lecture in the department and have been its Writing Tutors, and Chris is its e-learning manager.\u00a0 You can follow the links to find out a little more about us and why we are involved in the project.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve lined up a varied programme of activities for the blog.\u00a0 First, we are going to be posting the six videos from the Writing Project series.\u00a0 They feature historians at QMUL discussing the pleasure and pain of the writing process, and sharing the ways in which they approach it.\u00a0 They were developed by Jo and Chris as an aid for our students whilst Jo was writing tutor, and Jo has integrated them into our first year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.qmul.ac.uk\/modules\/hst4602\/history-practice\">History in Practice<\/a> module this year.\u00a0 It soon became clear to us whilst we were editing the videos, though, that we should not limit our audience to Queen Mary, nor to students and academics: writing is something that we all have in common.\u00a0 It was at that point that the Writing Matters idea was born.<\/p>\n<p>Writing Matters will feature some reflections on the videos from their participants, as well as from our own undergraduate and postgraduate students.\u00a0 We have also lined up some exciting guest authors, and we will be posting the audio of talks on writing that we have arranged for the 2013\/14 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>From the start, we have said that we want this blog to be a conversation, and we are open to proposals.\u00a0 If you would like to write a short piece about why writing matters to you, please <a href=\"mailto:c.sparks@qmul.ac.uk?subject=Writing%20Matters%20Proposal\">email Chris<\/a> (or Tweet him).\u00a0 We would love to hear from you.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll be posting about once a week.\u00a0 You can <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.history.qmul.ac.uk\/writingmatters\/feed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subscribe to our RSS feed<\/a>, or just keep checking back here.\u00a0 Spread the word.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Chris Sparks In our first post, Jo set out the Writing Matters philosophy.\u00a0 We wanted our first post to be inspiring and engaging.\u00a0 We wanted to tell you that this blog is intended to start a conversation about the process and purpose of writing, without getting bogged down in the details.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s great\u201d, you &hellip;
