About

The misshaping by words blog is an online diary of the research project Misshaping by Words. Literary Caricature between Texts, Images, and Mental Models based at the Queen Mary University of London. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 703235. The blog will publish news, work-in-progress activities, partial results, spin-off materials, and all the updates concerning the development of the research.

My name is Paolo Gervasi, I am the editor of the blog and the coordinator of the research project, supervised by Colin Jones, Professor of History at the Queen Mary University of London. For the past three years, I have been Research Fellow at the CTL (Center for the Data Processing of Texts and Images in Literary Tradition – Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa), where I worked on the ERC project Looking at Words Through Images, coordinated by Professor Lina Bolzoni.
I obtained my Ph.D. at the Scuola Normale Superiore defending a thesis on the literary essay and the forms of 20th Century literary criticism. My main research interests concern the history of literary criticism in relation with publishing and book history; relationships between the media system and literary forms; Cognitive poetics and the study of literature through the insights of mind sciences; digital humanities, with a particular focus on the representation of the overlapping of visual and literary cultures. I collaborate with online journals and magazines, mainly writing about the cultural impact of neurosciences.
Special thanks to Serena Pezzini for her help in conceiving and designing the blog, and for borrowing me her gaze.
